The Valley of the Shadow: Found, Fought, and Forged
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me."
— Psalm 23:4 (KJV)
For the last ten hours, I was in that valley.
Today was a brutal test of endurance. The "Forced Elongation" protocol—locking my new limb in a rigid brace to straighten the muscles—triggered a relentless storm. The pain skyrocketed to an 8/10. It wasn't just discomfort; it was a deep, tearing agony that threatened to break my resolve.
I felt like I was walking through the "shadow of death," isolated in a world of hurt. But the Scripture says, "I will fear no evil." That is not a feeling; it is a choice. Even when the body screams, the spirit stands guard.
I refused to surrender to the pain. I spent ten hours fighting, analyzing, and advocating for my own physiology. I knew that if I just "took it," the muscle would spasm and reject the treatment. I needed a strategy.
And finally, the breakthrough came.
I am incredibly thankful for Nurse Matt. He didn't just follow a protocol; he listened. He treated me as a partner in my own recovery. We reviewed the data, and he trusted my analysis. He worked with me to find the right chemical keys to unlock the spasm.
The biggest fix was incorporating Valium to stop the muscle from fighting the brace, along with more regular pain meds to take the edge off the fire.
Because of his partnership and the grace of God, the clouds have broken. I have brought the pain down from an 8 to a 5. It is not gone, but it is conquered. The shadow is receding.
I am still standing. The leg is straight. The spirit is intact.
Ex Cinere.
